A Slice of Pride

Every June, the city of Chicago lights up with color, joy, and powerful reminders of love, identity, and resilience. Pride Month offers a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and reflect on the journey toward equality and inclusion. It’s a month of both festivity and purpose, and one I feel especially connected to, not just as a Chicagoan, but as an infectious disease physician who works closely with the LGBTQ+ community.
Much of my work centers around sexual health and HIV care. I have the privilege of supporting patients through some of the most vulnerable and meaningful moments of their lives. Pride reminds me how far we’ve come in HIV care. From a time of stigma and silence to one of empowerment, visibility, and prevention through tools like PrEP and U=U. But it also reminds me how far we still have to go in creating a world that is truly safe and affirming for everyone.
This blog, while mostly about food, is at its heart about community. And this weekend, I want to celebrate the community that shows us what it means to live authentically, fight for justice, and show up for one another. So today’s post is a small but joyful tribute to Pride Month in the best way I know how: through cooking.
Enter: Pride Pizza! This colorful, veggie-packed recipe is as vibrant and beautiful as a Pride parade float. It features layers of red cherry tomatoes, orange and yellow bell peppers, sweet corn, fresh green broccoli, and purple onion all arranged in a rainbow across a cheesy, golden crust. It’s fun to make, full of flavor, and perfect for sharing with friends or family during your Pride weekend celebrations.
Whether you're watching the parade, gathering with loved ones, or simply taking time to honor what Pride means to you, I hope this pizza brings a little color and joy to your table. It’s a reminder that food can be playful, nourishing, and even a little bit radical—because sharing a meal is one of the most human ways we connect, celebrate, and support one another.
Happy Pride!
